Presidents are one of the most scrutinized people, from their looks to their opinions to their past mistakes. So it may be a surprise to know that 12 of the 45 presidents actually smoked the ganja!
We're going to start with the first president, George Washington. He was known to have grown hemp and he kept a thorough diary explaining his process. He was one of the first to describe the separation of female plants from male plants. He also smoked hemp to battle his toothaches.
Number 2 is the 2nd President, John Adams. He was another supporter of industrial hemp. He wrote an article for the Boston Evening Post in 1763, under a pseudonym saying, "We shall by and by want a world of Hemp more for our own consumption."
Thomas Jefferson is the 3rd on our list. He was another hemp farmer, said to have harvested it for himself. He was also said to have smuggled higher potency hemp seeds from China to the US. Jefferson was also an Ambassador to France during the hashish era.
Next is James Madison, the Father of the Constitution. He stated that hemp helped him have insight to help create a new democratic nation.
Number 5 is James Monroe. He is the first 'real' stoner on the list as he openly smoked hashish while he was an Ambassador to France and was said to have smoked up until his death at 73.
Next is Andrew Jackson. He openly wrote about smoking with the troops in different letters.
Zachary Taylor is number 7 on our list. There isn't much documentation but he was known to have smoked marijuana with his military troops during his time as President.
Number 8 is Franklin Pierce. Before becoming President, he was a soldier in the Mexican-American War and wrote that marijuana smoking was the only good thing in the war.
John F. Kennedy is number 9. There are many writings recounting JFK's use of marijuana for severe back pain. One exert from John F. Kennedy: A Biography reads, "On the evening of July 16, 1962, according to [Washington Post executive] Jim Truitt, Kennedy and Mary Meyer smoked marijuana together. … The president smoked three of the six joints Mary brought to him. At first he felt no effects. Then he closed his eyes and refused a fourth joint. ‘Suppose the Russians did something now.’"
Next up is Bill Clinton. His response when questioned about marijuana use was, “When I was in England I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and I didn’t like it. I didn’t inhale it, and never tried it again." However, it is said he did partake in marijuana, but only in edible form.
Number 11 is George W. Bush. He always avoided answering questions about cannabis explaining he didn't want some little kids doing what he tried. But he was known for his cocaine use in college.
The final President on our list is Barack Obama. He is probably the most open President concerning his cannabis use. He stated, "When I was a kid, I inhaled frequently. That was kind of the point,” during his first election in 2008.
These are just 12 known Presidents who used marijuana. There could be more who belong on the list but there isnt much information out there on the topic.
